Round Report – Philip J. Rotella

Posted by deo_lookout at 9 September, 2009, 1:34 pm

Date Played: August 30, 2009

Report: Overall, the rolling terrain offers a decent golf challenge. Tee shots are, more often than not, up or down hill. A driving range at the course offers players a spot to warm up. All in all, ff you have find yourself in the area, stop by and get a round in.

It had been at least ten years since I played Rotella. In fact, the last time was when this course was laid out with 6 par-3s, 6 par-4s and 6 par5s… which to my mind was unique and fun. The new layout eliminates one par 3 and one par 5 for a more traditional spread of par 3s, 4s and 5s. Some interesting holes:

#1 – Put a monster tee shot our there and you just might drive the green on this downhill par 4. It plays 320 from the whites and 345 from the blues. You’ll get 30 to 40s on the way down…

#5 – Tee box is 200+ feet up on this 206 yard par 3. I played it at about 185… which was just about right. Watch out for the cart ride down…it’s steep.

#6 – On the card, this hole only plays 468 from the whites – not the longest par 5 on the course. This number one handicapped hole plays a ton longer…this hole goes uphill from start to finish.

#11 – Playing just shy of 600 yards from the blues (554 from the whites), this par 5 demands a good drive. Not to mention out-of-bounds is in play all along the left side.

#14 – Dog right. The blues and whites play from the same distance. Good chance to score with two good shots into the green.

Cons
:
- The $79 weekend greens fee (cart included) is a bit steep. County residents can save $10 per round with the ‘county card’ (which costs $50).
- The greens, having just been aerated, were not in great shape.
- Club house offered little in a way of prepared food. There is a new dining room, which I didn’t check out.
